Have any burning questions about growing fruits or vegetables? Ever wonder how people grow fruits like bananas, mangos, guavas and cherimoyas? Do you want to know about how to manage all of the critters that eat our plants and fruits? Well, our Open Learning Day at the Spring Valley SDYS Fruit Forest is the absolutely perfect place to answer those questions AND learn (hands-on) about all sorts of growing/propagation techniques.

If we have special topics or classes we will be facilitating we will update our event details and send out a club email!

10:00am-12:00pm People suggest several topics that they would like to learn and then people that are willing to teach those subjects break off into specific groups to begin!

Horticultural Myths - MG Dawn Standke
It's easy to find gardening advice online,
but how much of it makes sense or is peer-reviewed research?

Our April Speaker is a 21 year - veteran University of California Master Gardener. Dawn Standke holds degrees in science and math, with a Master's Degree in computer engineering and artifical intelliegence.

Join us for some "Myth Busting" where Dawn will address topics including: Are banana peels great for your plants? Should Neem oil be a go-to solution for garden problems? Could copper nails kill trees?

Can I use pennies as a snail and slug repellant? Are bananas radioactive? Is milkweed toxic to humans?

In addition to researching horticultural myths, Dawn once worked as a computer programmer, but today she truly prefers gardening and growing many diverse fruits, vegetables and habitat plants to attract birds and butterflies. Along with her husband in Rancho Peñasquitos, together they tend a wildlife-friendly garden. Amazingly, bobcat kittens have been reared in their backyard for six years in a row! Dawn has a long list of accomplishments and accolades in our broader gardening community. Here's what the Master Gardeners wrote about her efforts: "Down the Garden Path.doc" - by BJ Boland
And her Poway Garden Club nominated her for:
2016 Gardener of the Year which she won!

Fruit Forest Work Day

Every 1st Saturday we meet out in Spring Valley and do work on our club nursery and fruit forest. Its an ever evolving project that not only gives us a living laboratory to propagate our plants but also makes the local community beautiful. If we have fruit on our trees its a great opportunity to taste some new, tasty cultivars! If you show up to help and would like some cuttings/budwood to take home please let us know and we will do our best to see if that is possible. Come on out, meet other plant nerds and give us a hand!
